On Friday, January 26, 2018 Dan Stewart and Mandi Kowalski, both from PROMO, Missouri’s LGBT advocacy organization, presented on the topic, “Understanding and Welcoming Transgender Clients: An LGBT Cultural Sensitivity Training Going Beyond Best Practices” to an audience of over 200 attendees at CenterPointe Hospital’s Behavioral Health Lecture series.
Dan and Mandi engaged the audience in a conversation about LGBT language, barriers to care in the transgender community and how to create welcoming spaces and develop best practices for clients and staff. They emphasized that as a practitioner and healthcare provider, it is essential to be comfortable communicating with and understanding of clients’ needs. This training provided participants a baseline of knowledge about the LGBT population in order to increase the practitioner level of comfort and decrease LGBT health disparities. Participants were provided resources to support to create an affirming and welcoming space for all LGBT clients.
