On Friday, December 8, 2017, Dr. Satish Kulkarni presented a lecture on TMS: An Effective Treatment for Depression to an audience of nearly 200 people at CenterPointe Hospital. TMS is a non-invasive , non-medication, outpatient treatment that is FDA-approved for the treatment of Major Depression. TMS is one of the newest and most innovative treatment approaches in the field of psychiatry, offering new hope for individuals who depression has not yet been effectively treated.
TMS uses magnetic fields to stimulate targeted nerve cells in the brain rendered inactive by depression. Highly focused magnetic pulses pass painlessly through the skull, non-invasively stimulating the target area. The technology used in TMS is similar to MRI and has a long, documented history of supporting its safety and use.
The course of treatment for TMS is 4-6 weeks and is conducted in the comfort of a physician’s office. Each session lasts approximately 40 minutes, although new technology will soon decrease the length of treatment sessions to 19 minutes.
At the end of the lecture three former patients gave moving testimonials about their positive experience with TMS treatment at CenterPointe Hospital and how their lives have changed for the better since receiving the treatment.
