Raafia Malik, MD and Candi Finan, LPC presented on the topic, “Integrated Treatment Approaches for Dual Disorders and Relapse Prevention” to an audience of approximately 200 participants at CenterPointe Hospital. Dr. Malik and Candi explained that substance addiction is often a chronic, relapsing illness which impacts every aspect of an individual’s mental and physical health and well-being. It’s not uncommon to find that people suffering with substance addictions also often have mental health problems.
Untreated mental health problems can lead to relapse to substance use. It is critical that an integrated approach utilizing both psychiatric and addiction treatment modalities be used to treat dual disorders. Medication-assisted treatment such as Vivitrol and Suboxone can stop the cravings for drugs and alcohol, allowing the individual to stay focused on their recovery plan. Continued verbal counseling is necessary to help individuals learn coping skills to deal with underlying depression, anxiety, trauma and other mental health issues, instead of turning to drugs and alcohol to numb their psychological pain.
