Partial Hospitalization Program

Partial hospitalization, also known as PHP, is a behavioral health program treats mental health and substance abuse issues. In partial hospitalization, the patient continues to reside at home, and attends PHP for 5-6 hours a day, Monday through Friday.

Partial hospitalization focuses on the overall treatment of the individual and can be part of a continuum of care after inpatient hospitalization or residential care, or as a more structured option to traditional outpatient therapy.

PHP includes services for adolescents, adults and senior adults. PHP is available for the treatment of depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and other mental illnesses, as well as alcohol and drug use.

PHP is ideal for clients who have come from an inpatient setting who are able to maintain their independence in the community, or those who need more mental health counseling support than offered in traditional outpatient treatment. PHP increases each person’s understanding of their illness, teaches important life skills and helps individuals manage everyday challenges that arise with work, relationships and family.

Treatment methods provided by PHP typically include the following services:

  • A diagnostic interview, physical, and assessment when first entering the PHP
  • Development of a treatment and recovery plan based on individual needs and goals
  • Psychopharmacological assessment
  • Medication management
  • On-site nursing services
  • Group therapy
  • Self-assessment
  • Emotion regulation
  • Coping, communication, problem solving and life skills groups
  • Safety plan
  • Recreational activities
  • Development of a continuing care or discharge plan for after PHP is completed
  • Therapy services are provided by licensed therapists and medical staff

Group therapy is one of the foundational elements of PHP treatment. PHP typically offers multiple group therapy sessions each day. Led by a therapist, or other appropriate professional, group therapy facilitates discussion on treatment and gives group members the opportunity to share insights from their own personal journeys and to encourage other members who are facing similar challenges. Group therapy serves as a safe and structured environment for participants to practice productive interpersonal communication and other skills that are essential to recovery.

Many people who struggle with mental health and/or substance use disorders can benefit from the incorporation of certain prescription psychotropic medications into their treatment plans. When a PHP participant has been prescribed medication, they may meet with one of our psychiatrists or nursing staff for medication management services.

Some individuals suffer from both mental health and substance use issues. PHP offers dual diagnosis treatment for co-occurring mental disorders. Dual diagnosis treatment works to heal both disorders at once so a person can recover completely.
